Screens placed on exterior school fence to keep chickens on campus!
Early this month students placed cloth screen material on the lower portion of the wrought iron fence at HHS to keep the chickens on campus after school hours.

Mr. R Connor receives an Innovative Grant from the UUSD for his proposal to build portable chicken coops to take to other schools in the district to share the HHS Family Farm chickens
We have a new Bird......
One of the HHS students brought by a nestless sparrow. We are attempting to keep it alive and nurse it to maturity.

Friday 5/28 Exterior Panel installation Completed!
On Friday I had two students stay after school to help complete the exterior panel installation.

Memorial Day - Current holiday began in 1971

Memorial day actually started after the Civil War 1865 called declaration day changed to memorial day after WW1 1918
On Memorial day - parades, public events, the president usually goes to a cemetery -honor those that gave their lives in battle.
Tulsa Race Riots - Tulsa Okla - Black Wall Street 1921 - Blacks and Whites were segregated - An incident occurred between a black and a white. Within 24 hours a mob burned down 35 square blocks of black-owned businesses. It is just now being brought to national attention.
Space - First spacewalk was in 1965. Russians were the first, America followed three months later. Since there have been over 200 spacewalks. Currently, use spacewalks to make repairs and help in deployment on the ISS. Much training in pools

COVID 19 Biggest story in the 21 century. The question is did the virus escape from a lab in China or was it caused naturally. Intel is stating that some scientists from labs in China were sick prior to the December outbreak.
Lunar Eclipse - Super Flower Blood Moon - Total Lunar Eclipse. It happened in South America.
East Central Africa - Rwanda -Two animals on the endangered list. They are Golden Monkey and the Mountain Gorilla. 1980 there were less than 250 Gorillas and now there are more than 1,000. 98% of our DNA is shared with the Gorillas. Currently to visit the Gorilla humans must wear masks.
Panda Bear was born in the Smithsonian National Zoo 9 months ago.

The Middle East - the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is currently visiting. Seize fire began last week. After 240 Palestinians/12 Israelis were killed. The US will make significant contributions to rebuilding.
Olympics - For the Japan Olympics which being July 23, only athletes can attend. No visitor/spectators. Japan reached a high in COVID cases on May 12. The US is still issuing a do not travel to Japan. Some Olympic committees are asking for the games to be postponed. CDC is saying even if vaccinated you can still get COVID.
Lord Tweed Mouth - Scotland - Created the Golden Retriever - Used to sniff out people infected with COVID. 94% accurate under lab condition. Dog able to sniff out asymptomatic carriers. Six to eight weeks of training of the dog.
Honey Bees - Dutch researchers have trained bees to stick out their tongue when sniffing out COVID in animals

1 Create a folder in your drive called SOUND
2 Give me Roger_Connor@upland.k12.ca.us permission to access your Sound folder
3. Get Sounds
Sounds on Sounddogs.com. Sounddogs.com
to get sound on Sounddogs.
Play sound that you want
Click the blue circle with the white i and select
the Download Mp3 Preview on the dialog box that appears.
Name the sound so you know which one it is.
Place the saved sound in your SOUND Folder
in your drive
WAV file sounds
To get a WAV file. Type in a name of a TV show
or favorite MOVIE followed by WAV in the search.
Select WAV file, when played click on the 3 dots
to the right of the sound bar and select Download.
MP3 Sounds(Favorite Song)
Go to youtube and copy the URL of the song
then google search youtube to mp3 download.
Download song as an MP3 file. Save to your drive SOUND folder.
Create a post on your blogger Title it SOUND
Type the name of the sounds you downloaded and saved.
One by one highlight the text of the sound and select LINK .
Go back to the drive folder and control/click on the sound
you want and select get link. Copy the link and paste to
the link created on your blog page.

Arctic Region - Russia staking claim to the arctic circle. International law stipulates that the arctic circle areas within 200 miles of a countries coast can be claimed as theirs. Well the US does not want Russia to control the whole region of the artic. Russia is now land its largest planes in the Artic placing them within 160 miles of NATO & 200 miles of any ship in the ocean. Planes that they are able to land are similar to our B52 bombers. So Russias rhetoric is 1. Strong military presence, 2. Dominating the Sea routes around the Artic, 3 Collecting minerals, oil, and gas from the area.
Central Africa- the Democratic Republic of the Congo there was a volcanic eruption this past week, with the flow of lava subsiding on Sunday. The last time the volcano erupted was in 2002. This time is took out 600 homes, 5 schools, and some death. Goma was the nearest populated city in the area.
Maasai Mara National Reserve - Kenya - Lost 80% of the countries revenue was through tourism. Tourism came to a halt with the coronavirus pandemic. As a result, poaching has taken place. Park rangers are making flyovers to count the animal population.

Today in class the students performed the maintenance run of the farm, checked in on the chickens, collected eggs, and filled the water bowls.
The students also continued work on the Tiny Home installing the two exterior panels around the door. They installed both the full length bottom pieces and the smaller top pieces.

A Weird Egg!
I collected this egg from the coop this week. Several reasons for this.....young hen starting to lay, older hen, or calcium deficient hen. Not a big deal unless we start seeing more of these frequently.

Mariana Trench 1,500 miles long - 43 miles wide, and it's 7 1/2 miles deep 36,000ft deep. Scar. largely unexplored only 25 people have been into it. Last unexplored area on Earth. Takes 4 1/2 hours of freefall to get to the trench - 6 ft/sec decent. Coming back up takes 3 1/2 hours
The vessel was made by Trident Submarines
